List of gases/vapours that may generate an explosive atmosphere

We do not rule out the possibility of errors in this list. We will do our best to correct them as soon as possible.

In ATEX, gases and vapours are classified according to two different but complementary criteria (gas group vs. temperature class), which is why they go hand in hand in the marking of ATEX equipment.

Gas group (IIA, IIB, IIC)

The classification of gases from an ATEX standpoint is based on three main parameters:

Parameter Description
MESG (Maximum Experimental Safe Gap) The maximum gap through which a flame can escape. The lower the required value, the more hazardous the gas.
MIE (Minimum Ignition Energy) The minimum energy required to initiate ignition. Lower values indicate higher hazard.
Representative Gas / Example A “model” gas typically associated with each group is used as a reference.

This classification is important because it determines gases’ sensitivity to ignition and indicates how difficult it is to confine/extinguish an explosion within equipment. This, in turn, defines the requirements that electrical apparatus intended for use in an explosive atmosphere must meet.

Temperature class (T1, …, T6)

The temperature class indicates the maximum surface temperature permitted for electrical equipment in service, thereby preventing self-ignition due to heat in an explosive atmosphere.

Glossary (for the table)

Autoignition temperature:

The autoignition temperature is the minimum temperature at which a substance ignites spontaneously in air without the need for a spark, flame, or external ignition source.

Flash point:

The flash point is the minimum temperature at which a flammable liquid gives off vapours in sufficient quantity to form, with air, a mixture that can ignite in the presence of an external ignition source (spark, flame, hot surface, etc.).

Initial boiling point:

The initial boiling point is the lowest temperature at which a flammable liquid or liquid mixture begins to boil.

Relative density:

The relative density of a gas or vapour indicates how many times heavier or lighter it is than air, taking the density of air under normal conditions as the reference.

Lower Explosive Limit (LEL):

The minimum concentration of a flammable gas or vapour in air, expressed as % by volume, below which the mixture is not flammable or explosive because there is too little fuel for combustion to be sustained.

Upper Explosive Limit (UEL):

The maximum concentration of a flammable gas or vapour in air, expressed as % by volume, above which the mixture does not explode because there is excess fuel and insufficient oxygen to sustain combustion.
