In many cases, these areas must be equipped with ATEX\u2011certified electrical equipment.<\/p><br><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To equip an area or a machine exposed to explosion risk, it is essential to know the classification of the location. This classification is determined based on the explosion risk assessment. With this assessment and depending on the technical requirement, we can select the most suitable equipment, taking into account both safety and technical requirements.<\/p><br><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This article analyses locations and equipment, not the substances that originate the explosion risk. Its interest lies in linking the classification of the location with the selection of equipment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b8cd1e8 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"b8cd1e8\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bc55325 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"bc55325\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Locations:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09e165e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"09e165e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To describe locations in explosive atmospheres, the designations <strong>Class I<\/strong> and <strong>Class II<\/strong> are used<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Class I:<\/strong> locations with explosion risk due to gases, vapours or mists.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Locations must be assessed in terms of risks and, according to the result of this evaluation, classified as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Zone 0: Location in which the explosive atmosphere is present continuously, for long periods, or frequently.<\/li>\n<li>Zone 1: Location in which an explosive atmosphere may occur under normal operating conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Zone 2: Location in which an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur under normal operating conditions and, if it does occur, it will exist only for a short time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Class II:<\/strong> locations with explosion risk due to dust.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As in the previous case, Class II locations must undergo a risk assessment. It forms together with coal and when mixed with air can cause violent explosions when in contact with an ignition source. In addition to its explosive potential, it is dangerous because it can displace oxygen and cause asphyxiation.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Group II:<\/strong> equipment intended for use in areas with explosion risk due to gases and vapours, excluding mines susceptible to firedamp.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This group has the following subdivisions:<\/p>\n<p>IIA (reference: propane)<\/p>\n<p>IIB (reference: ethylene)<\/p>\n<p>IIC (reference: hydrogen)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">See list of gases that can generate an explosive atmosphere: <a style=\"color: red;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inpratex.com\/en\/list-of-gases-vapours-that-may-generate-an-explosive-atmosphere\/\">https:\/\/www.inpratex.com\/en\/list-of-gases-vapours-that-may-generate-an-explosive-atmosphere\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Group III:<\/strong> equipment intended for use in areas with explosion risk due to combustible dust other than mines susceptible to firedamp.<\/p>\n<p>With the divisions:<\/p>\n<p>IIIA (combustible <strong>particles<\/strong><sup>2<\/sup>),<\/p>\n<p>IIIB (non\u2011conductive <strong>dust<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>IIIC (conductive <strong>dust<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><sup>2<\/sup>The <strong>difference<\/strong> between <strong>combustible particles and dust<\/strong> lies in their classification within the ATEX framework. In this context, <strong>combustible particles<\/strong> <strong>are considered to be fibres and larger particles<\/strong> such as textile fibres or wood shavings.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Directive 2014\/34\/EU Annex I, <strong>equipment<\/strong> intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres is classified into <strong>two categories<\/strong> for <strong>Group I<\/strong> equipment and <strong>three categories<\/strong> for <strong>Group II<\/strong> equipment<\/p>\n<p><strong>Group I:<\/strong><br \/><strong>Category M 1<\/strong>: very high level of protection<\/p>\n<p><strong>Category M 2<\/strong>: high level of protection<\/p>\n<p><strong>Group II:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Category 1<\/strong>: very high level of protection <strong>(zones 0\/20)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Category 2<\/strong>: high level of protection <strong>(zones 1\/21)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Category 3<\/strong>: normal level of protection <strong>(zones 2\/22)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><u>Note: Directive 2014\/34\/EU does not refer to Group III as the EN60079\u20110 standard does in its most recent version.<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When referring to gases, vapours and combustible dusts, in summary we can say that locations are organised into two classes (Class I and Class II), while equipment is grouped into three groups (Groups I, II and III).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The equipment of Group I is classified into two categories, while that of Groups II and III is classified into three categories. The meeting point between locations and equipment are the zones: locations are classified as zone 0, 1 and 2 (for gases and vapours) and zone 20, 21 and 22 (for combustible dust).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The equipment categories, depending on their level of protection, determine in which zone they can be safely used.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;
